This stupa was built as a memory of the temples which have being sunk in the Kotmale Reservoir after constructing the Kotmale dam.
The construction was started in early 1980s but was not completed until 2016. It was officially opened in 2016.
It has a height of 88 m. Therefore it is a larger stupa in size which is closer to the Ruwanweli Stupa in size. The design was done by the renowned Engineer, Dr. S. Kulasinghe. It is similar to the Kalutara Stupa in in design having a smaller stupa inside the body of it and allowing the pilgrims to go inside of the larger stupa’s body.
