GAMANA This internationally renowned memento which still stands with all its pride is a priceless gift received by the colonial ruling. Though its constructions were started by the Portuguese, it was brought to today’s standard by the Dutch in the 17th century. This marvelous construction with historical, archeological, and architectural significance is 52 hectares in extent and consists of two entrances. The distance from our metropolitan city is 116 km and situated on the southeastern side of the city of Galle. Several ramparts, bastions such as flag rock, wart, sun bastion, hospitals, schools, religious centers of all the religions are some of the features of this remarkable place. This is really like a small town with all the facilities. As far as the houses and other buildings are concerned almost all of them are of Dutch colonial style. People of all walks can be seen. There are Sinhalese, Muslims, and Tamils and people of all religions can also be seen. German, Dutch, English, and Portuguese people can also be seen in minor numbers. Just like the Trincomalee town, this is a place where all communities live in peace and harmony.
At present most of the government institutions departments and ministries that belong to the southern region are run inside this fort premises. The seaside rampart is one of the best places to spend an immaculate evening. In the evening, the whole area is like a carnival, with different entertainment activities and the daytime in this premises is very busy with local and foreign tourists.
