GAMANA Our small island Sri Lanka, though small, it is not small with regard to natural beauty. Golden sandy beaches around the country share much of their beauty. One such beach is Arugambay, situated in Pottuvil on the Eastern coastal belt of Sri Lanka. It is 404 km from Colombo. There are several access roads to this beautiful place.
The road via Ratnapura,Beragala,Wellawaya,Monaragala Siyambalanduwa,Lahugala and pottuvil is the easiest way.Travellers can also use the route via Kandy,Mahiyangana – Padiyathalawa,Maha oya, Mangalagama Ampara and Pottuvil.
The sea which is shallow, that stretches as far as 500m is very unique when compared with other beaches in Sri Lanka. Very smooth sand, free from rubbish, pebbles, and harmful sea creatures is the other secret of being famous. The wide and far stretched beach with soft sand used by hundred of foreigners for basking is wonderful and enchanting. In addition to these things, travelers are able to have very good experience in fishing and fishermen’s arrangements for fishing.
Enjoying this enchanting beach is not the one and only thing that one can do here. There are a lot of other experiences that they can get. The Buddhist temple, Muhudu Maha Viharaya which became so public, after Tsunami in 2004, is a temple that dates to the time of King Kavantissa. That temple is about 2000 years old We can still see some of the ruins together with the newly built dagaba, shrine room, and alm hall. In between Lahugala and Pottuvil, there is another famous temple which is known as Magul Maha Viharaya. The legend behind this temple says that it is the temple where the wedding of King Kawanthissa and Viharamahadeviya had taken place.
The big stretches of paddy field and the thick green color forest of the Lahugala National Park could give you an everlasting experience. There is a big chain of hotels and restaurants that would solve all your accommodation problems. Another eye-catching scene of the area is the view of wild elephants, that can be seen on either side of the road near Lahugala National park. The most significant factor with Arugambay is the sea which is very much appropriate for surfing. It is considered one of the best places for water sports.
