This beautiful and historical temple situated on a small hillock about six kilometers away from the city of Galle is a very famous and attractive temple in southern Sri Lanka.
Although it belongs to the Akmeemana division, it is very close to Unawatuna and anyone can easily reach this place within twenty minutes from the road that runs Yatagala side from Eramudugaha junction Unawatuna. The history of this temple dates back as far back as the era of king Devanampiyathisa.In years, it is more than 2300 years old. A branch of Sri Maha Bodhi can be seen with a huge stone fence around it.
The eighteen riyan Buddha’s statue in sleeping stance is said to have been built by a minister called Devapathiraja during the era of King Parakramabahu II from 1225 to 1259. Frescoes that depict the Wessanthara Jathakaya and a banyan tree which is about 800 years old are other unique features of this temple. At present several temples including Sithulpawwa Rajamaha Viharaya are administered under Yatagala Rajamaha Viharaya. It is also believed that King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in the line of kings of Sri Lanka had donated a huge stock of manorial system (nindagam) which can still be seen.
